Finally, it's my Parting Shot to preview the 2017-18 season for the Saskatoon Blades...which will then elicit a phone call from my biggest fan, Gary from Warman, one of his two or three calls a year that I now ignore as soon as I hear his voice...
There is new record for most home runs in a major league baseball season and I love it. Don't get me wrong, there is still a place for small-ball where managers use the hit-and-run, bunts, sacrifices and the always exciting suicide squeeze to move runners and manufacture runs.
However there is nothing more eye pleasing and awe inspiring than a long high fly ball carrying well over the outfield fence to the wonderment of fans at the ball park and in their homes. Blue Jay slugger Jose Bautista's bleacher bomb and following bat flip that beat Texas in their deciding playoff game a couple of years back was much more impressive, impactful and exciting than a sacrifice fly or run scoring single.
But there is enough offense from the bigger, stronger and better conditioned athletes swinging for the fences for baseball's brain trust to get rid of the designated hitter. It's time to level the playing field's in both the American and National League's to give us fans the game's potential full-meal-deal each and every time a home-plate Umpire yells...play ball!
