Finally, it's my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today's Star-Phoenix Sports Section...
First headline...Winnipeg/Saskatoon aiming to host world, Joint group bids for 2019 junior hockey tourney. My reaction...the word after Saskatchewan, meaning Saskatoon and Regina, hosted the World Juniors in 2010 was that it would likely be the last time because the event in Canada would become something that N-H-L teams, with large arenas and media presence, would take over. This news shows a creative side to Winnipeg's thinking, involving Saskatoon as a partner...a city with a great history of hosting fabulous sports events...including this one twice previously. The most notable thing I see in the story is that Jonathan Huntington was at yesterday's formal presentation on behalf of the Saskatoon part of the joint bid. He works for Cameco...and that's big-time corporate clout at the table!
Next headline...Indians beat Cubs 6-0 in World Series opener. Reaction...The Cubbies found out what the Blue Jays did in the A-L-C-S. If you can't get to the Cleveland starting pitcher before the sixth inning, your chances of winning are pretty slim considering the Tribe's bullpen. Mind you, could Andrew Miller possibly come back tonight after throwing almost 50 pitches in two innings last night?!
Last headline...Contractual chatter now a Tuesday tradition. My reaction...with the playoffs out of the picture for a long time, the future of Darian Durant as a Saskatchewan Roughrider becomes a focal point of the day-to-day coverage of the Green and White. While many in Rider Nation feel there is a need to develop a replacement...sooner than later...Chris Jones and the Riders seem intent on re-signing the 34-year-old veteran. He didn't have a very good game in the rain on Saturday against Montreal. But, he had lots of company. All in all, to this observer, Durant has done more than enough to warrant a new deal and remain as the main man in Saskatchewan!
