In case you missed it, a week ago today we moved a step closer to marijuana legalization, or, in case we’re also getting closer to designating the word marijuana as offensive, cannabis. The House of Commons vote for the Bill was 200 for, 82 against. Of course now the Bill goes to the Senate which could possibly throw a monkey wrench into the Liberal government’s plan to legalize pot by next summer because Conservative senators may hold things up.
A recent Ispos poll indicated Canadians overwhelmingly want to tear down trade barriers to alcohol, and any other legal product, across the country. The Supreme Court is getting ready to hear a landmark case on provincial beer and liquor monopolies triggered by a New Brunswick man who was arrested on his return to that province after he had bought alcohol in Quebec.
I went to a live show performance at a local venue the other night. The performance received a standing ovation. It started me thinking about the last time I went to a live performance in Saskatoon that did not get a standing O. A standing ovation is a form of applause where members of a seated audience stand up while applauding after extraordinary performances of particularly high acclaim.
From time to time I glance through Coffeetalks I’ve done through the years and as time marches on and we all get older I’d like to revisit George Carlin’s views on aging that I talked about more than a dozen years ago. He wondered if we realized that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we are kids. If you’re less than 10 years old you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. “How old are you”? “I’m 4 ½”. You’re never 36 ½ but you’re 4 ½ going on 5. You get into your teens. Now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number or even a few ahead.
I know I’m supposed to cheer for the West in the Grey Cup but I have to admit I wasn’t unhappy to see Toronto win on Sunday. That Ricky Ray is one cool cucumber at quarterback as the Riders know only too well. He was cast off by Edmonton how many years ago now? The coach, Marc Trestman, won coach of the year honours and the Argos have a great defence coached by Rider castoff Corey Chamblin.
