Conservative Leadership candidate Kellie Leitch has been taking heat for her suggestion that new immigrants should be screened for “Canadian values”. Conservative competitors and some other party faithful have said it’s a bad idea. Except many Canadians don’t think it’s such a bad idea depending on what the screening would consist of. We do have a Canada Citizenship Test that must be passed when applying to come to this country. It evaluates knowledge of Canada including rights and responsibilities of a citizen, and language abilities.
A pit bull is a dog of an American variety of bull terrier, noted for its muscular build and often associated with ferocity. Pit bull type breeds along with the American pit bull terrier include the American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, and American Bully. The American Bulldog is also sometimes included. Back in June, a 55-year old woman was mauled to death in her own backyard in Montreal by a dog authorities identified as a pit bull. The incident rekindled the ages-old debate on what to do about pit bulls.
Seeing that everyone else under the sun seems to have commented on the New Mosaic Stadium in Regina I might as well say something too. I was fortunate enough to be there and watch the game from the visitor’s radio broadcasting booth. I had to remind myself to keep my groans and other signs of dismay quiet as the Huskies showed some flashes but eventually self-destructed lest I interrupt the CJWW broadcast team of Dave Thomas and Barkley Schlosser. That wouldn’t have been very professional of me.
I’m a radio guy (you say “I know, Captain Obvious”) but I have also been an avid reader since I was two years old. I’ve watched how advances in technology have had a profound effect on the print world. Newspapers ,magazines and books were around long before electronic media, radio and television, and there’s still something satisfying about holding something solid in your hands, other than a tablet, while reading. However, times change and I see where Rogers Publishing has announced another retreat from print media as four of its lead magazine titles, Canadian Business, Flare, MoneySense and Sportsnet, will cease publication. I’m glad to see Maclean’s will continue in print form although monthly rather than weekly.
A backbench provincial MLA in Ontario has put forth a private members bill that’s should not only be passed in that province but everywhere across the nation. She wants security bypass software, or “scalper bots”, outlawed. This is computer software that scoops up huge numbers of tickets to concerts and sporting events and forces customers to the expensive resale market. Quite often, tickets to popular events are unavailable online moments after they go on sale, frustrating those who are trying to buy, credit cards at the ready, constantly refreshing the site but finding themselves shut out.
