I heard someone use the saying, “It’s a chicken and egg situation”. This expression never goes away referring to which came first, the chicken or the egg. A dozen years ago or so I talked about how I solved this mystery when I was 10 years old. True story. I was an altar boy in church and all of us would get together once a month for some fun and fellowship. One time our priest said there would be a prize for whoever could come up with the most rational argument as to which came first, the chicken or the egg.
When it was my turn I said in my most serious 10 year-old voice, “Doesn’t it say somewhere in the Bible that God brought the animals before Adam and Eve so that they could see them and name them? It doesn’t seem likely that God rolled an egg up to them. They wouldn’t have known what to do with it, fry it, boil it, poach it or scramble it, never mind wait around to see if something came out of it. It would have been the real thing, just like all the other animals. Therefore the chicken must have come first”. And, you guessed it, Vic got the prize. I don’t want to ruffle any feathers or end up with egg on my face but I think Jerry Seinfeld came up with the most original answer to that other eternal question, why did the chicken cross the road? Jerry said, “Why does anyone cross the road? I mean, why doesn’t anyone think to ask what the heck was this chicken doing walking around all over the place anyway”?
