CAA Saskatchewan has indicated that there has been an uptick in unsafe driving in school zones, particularly speeding and distracted driving. I don't doubt that. In my neighbourhood, drivers either speed up right after Pope John Paul II or speed right until they get to the elementary school but by the same token I sure don't have a lot of empathy for parents who proceed to jaywalk when picking their kids up from school. Nice role modelling there.
I'll give you another example: I watched two children, probably brother and sister, cross the road at the corner down from Alvin Buckwold. I waited, I was turning right and then after they crossed the street, they proceeded to cross again, in the direct driving path of my vehicle, and neither looked up to gauge where I was at, or whether there were other vehicles coming. When I was a kid, my dad would have had a fit if I'd pulled a stunt like that. We had the fear of God, parents and cars instilled in us by the time we were done kindergarten. Be good examples when getting your kids from school and tell them again, again, and again until it is an instinct they can't ignore to look both ways when crossing.
