The Sasknow.ca Sports Poll question a couple of days ago asked our opinion of one of the most talented receivers in the CFL, the Riders’ Duron Carter. As of this writing, 8% of respondents had said he is a selfish diva who should be cut before he destroys the locker room. 22% said they love him because he is a character who gives the otherwise boring CFL a colourful personality.
34% said he is a terrible role model as a professional athlete and sets a poor example for young athletes. The remaining 36% said they don’t care about Carter’s antics. He catches the football. I seem to remember growing up that major league football, baseball and hockey players didn’t grandstand very much. The biggest show boaters were soccer players. Maybe it’s because there aren’t a lot of goals scored in professional soccer as a rule and so each one is a big deal. Today, when a CFL or NFL player scores a touchdown you’d think he’d just won the Grey Cup or Super Bowl and some NHL players after scoring carry on as if they’d just won the Stanley Cup. Soccer players still run around the field in a frenzy after scoring and only baseball players seem to mostly take hitting a home run or scoring a run in stride except for some high fives in the dugout. I don’t mind Duron Carter doing a little show boating but he does sometimes go too far. In big games when push comes to shove he needs to just catch the ball and gain yards to help the team.
