With the Canadian Football League season now in the history books the league’s brain trust will have time to sit down and discuss what can be done to improve the game. Last Friday’s Sasknow.ca Sports Poll question asked what change we’d like to see the most in the CFL. As of this writing, 13% of respondents had voted to eliminate the single point for missed field goals. 17% said the salary cap should be increased significantly.
22% said we should have just one division. And 48% said we should add a 5th Eastern team. I thought about voting to eliminate the single point for a missed field goal because I don’t like the idea of being rewarded after a miss. However, I went with the majority on this one because adding a 5th team in the East would give us a balanced, 10-team league. I’m not sure how a single 9-team division schedule would work and increasing the salary cap could mean just one or two marquee players would get paid more rather than the rank and file guys. And, speaking of changes, a guy I know told me the other day we should go to 4 downs in the CFL but that would result in a domino effect requiring a few other changes to avoid scores like 98-70. While the league masterminds deliberate, football fanatics now have the NFL to watch till February after which there’s a football drought until June. Hey, there’s a change to ponder: What about the CFL starting in May with the Grey Cup in October?
