The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22nd, 1963 remains one of the most fascinating topics of discussion from the 20th century, at least for older baby boomers (and there are a lot of us). For millennials I guess it’s just a footnote in history that older people bring up once in a while and documentaries are still shown about on tv. For my generation it’s one of those events where you can remember where you were and what you were doing when you first heard about it.
I was just a kid living on an Air Force base in Germany but I remember I was in the base hockey rink and it was evening since Europe is many hours ahead of North America timewise. Conspiracy theories have swirled about regarding JFK’s assassination for 54 years and in October 1994 the U.S. government dictated that the National Archives would open up the files pertaining to the event in 25 years. That happened last week with the exception of some documents declared sensitive by the CIA and FBI and which will still be kept secret for another 6 months. Was there a second gunman along with Lee Harvey Oswald? Was the CIA or the Mafia or Cuba involved? Theories abound but, personally, I have a feeling when all the files have been laid bare, conspiracy theorists are probably going to be disappointed. Then they can turn their attention back to the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. Did it happen or was it faked?
