Here’s a novel idea: How about having a “Night Mayor” as well as a regular Mayor? Sounds kind of crazy but it seems that’s what the Big Apple is going to have, not our Big Apple, Toronto, but THE Big Apple, New York City. The actual title is Executive Director of the Office of Nightlife but everybody refers to it as the Night Mayor. Apparently up until last year you weren’t allowed to dance in New York bars, restaurants and clubs.
I can understand the first two but how can you not have dancing in a club? It must have been going on anyway and it doesn’t matter anymore because they scrapped the ban last year when it was announced the city would have a Night Mayor, who happens to be a she. She will act as a point of contact between city agencies, communities, and the city’s night life industries. Having a Night Mayor should help New York’s “daytime” Mayor, Bill de Blasio get a good night’s sleep. Although, of course, he’s still responsible considering he is elected and the Night Mayor is appointed by him and Councillors. New York is home to over 8 ½ million people, more than double the population of the country’s second largest city, Los Angeles, which perhaps could also benefit from a Night Mayor all things considered. Or how about Las Vegas? It’s population is less than Winnipegs but, as you know, things are a-happening there 24/7.
