Scammer scumbags are always coming up with new ways to try and dupe us out of some cash. Earlier this week the Saskatoon Police Service warned us about the latest scam attempt whereby someone will call you from what they say is the Canada Revenue Agency demanding payment for back taxes with an i-Tunes gift card if you have one. When you rightfully refuse to do so, you then get a call from what appears on your display as the number for the Saskatoon Police Service.
The person on the phone claims to be a police officer and urges you to accede to the request to pay the taxes via an i-Tunes card. What the fraudsters have done is called “spoofing”. That’s where the bad guys use software to mask the real number they are calling from and make it show up on call display as something else. In this case, the scumbags have spoofed the Saskatoon Police Service number so it shows up on your phone. Please remember the police will never, ever call you regarding payment of taxes. Also, CRA never communicates with taxpayers this way, nor does it request payment via gift cards. Today’s technology is both a blessing and a curse. Weak no-goods who don’t want to earn an honest living are always scheming new ways to use technology to relieve honest folk of their hard-earned money. We have to be vigilant.
