I feel compelled to say something about the mass shooting in Las Vegas but I don’t really know what to say. I’ve heard, read and watched the news stories and, like everyone, feel so sad that something like this can happen. There have been mass killings before by lunatics with guns in the United States but they just keep getting bigger and crazier. I saw late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue about the Vegas tragedy and he is bang-on when he wonders how people are allowed to buy weapons that are good for one thing:
rapid-fire killing of as many people as possible in the shortest time. Do hunters need automatic or semi-automatic rifles? No, they don’t. Does the average American household require these type of weapons that can fire hundreds of rounds per minute in case a burglar breaks in? Of course not. Gun laws in the U.S. are mind-numbingly stupid. And it gets worse with Congress apparently about to pass a law deregulating the use of silencers. That’s right, republicans want to pass a gun bill that will make it easier for mass shooters to kill an even greater number of victims. Can you imagine if the guy on the 32nd floor had silencers on the weapons he was using? It took a minute or two for people to realize that the sounds they were hearing was gunfire. If there had been no sound there would most likely have been hundreds dead rather than 59. Never mind focusing on just Trump in the dumpster fire that is the White House, it seems more and more that when it comes to the American federal government, the lunatics (read: republicans) really are running the asylum.
