CP Rail continues to outperform CN Rail in grain car delivery---but the Western Grain Elevator Association (WGEA) is not sounding the alarm yet.
Executive Director Wade Sobkowich says CN has been moving more intermodal products than expected and that is impacting grain."They (CN) knew what the crop size was and they were ready for it we believe, but they've had to or decided to I suppose, divert some capacity away from grain and into intermodal."Sobkowich says CN is working on adding crews and locomotives to create additional capacity in the system."We are of the view that we need to give them some more time before we elevate the issue"Sobkowich says in the most recent week, CN provided a car fufillment order percentage of 64 per cent compared to CP at 87 per cent. In most case, the delays are not very long."Most of them are coming in the very next week, so it isn't an issue of biblical proportions yet. The cars are late, but not crazy late.""CN is doing the right things and saying the right things, and we'll just see if they'll be able to deliver on that," says Sobkowich.
