"Threes" were wild Wednesday night as the Saskatoon Blades out-lasted the Hurricanes 2-1 in Lethbridge.
Chase Wouters shot high over a sprawled Stuart Skinner in the Canes net with 6.7 seconds left in overtime, giving the Bridge City Bunch a three-game winning streak. All three triumphs have come with Ryan Kubic in goal. On this occasion, the 19-year-old St. Andrews, Mb., product stopped 35 shots for his third consecutive first-star accolades.
"There was a lot of "scissoring" going on out there," explained Wouters about his game-winner. "I "scissored" with (Gage Ramsay), he passed it to me in the slot and I just shot it in. I think it went high, left side."
It had to go high to beat Skinner, celebrating his 19th birthday Wednesday. The Edmonton Oilers' third round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft matched Kubic save-for-save until the winner.
Mark Rubinchik also beat Skinner, a power play goal in the third period to force overtime. It was the first goal of Rubinchik's WHL career...in his 77th game. Kubic's only blemish came in the first period when Josh Tarzwell opened the scoring for Lethbridge, now 7-6-1 for the season.
The victory upped the Blue and Gold's record to 6-7-1, moving them ahead of Edmonton into 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings...just two points back of the Hurricanes, Kootenay and Prince Albert for a wild-card playoff spot.
"Now, we're one game (below) .500, so that's huge trying to get back to .500," said Wouters.
The Blades will try to get there Friday when they play the second of three straight road games in the Central Division at Medicine Hat. Game time is 7:30 with the play-by-play on 92-9, THE BULL at 7 p.m. Following is the official game summary from the WHL...
