The Saskatoon Blades rallied from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits in the third period Saturday to defeat the Broncos 4-3 in Swift Current.
It was the Blue and Gold’s fourth straight victory to close out the 2017 portion of their 2017-2018 WHL regular-season schedule. The Blades have now won seven of their last eight games and were 8-4-0 in December…their first winning month of the season. Saskatoon also went above .500 for the first time in the campaign…now 18-17-3.
Braylon Shmyr scored the winning goal with 4:35 remaining in the third period. Josh Paterson added a pair of third period goals in the Bridge City Bunch rally while Cam Hebig notched his 29th goal of the season, opening the scoring on the Blue and Gold’s first shot on goal of the game.
“Our second period, we weren’t willing to compete,” observed Blades’ assistant coach Jerome Engele. “It was like we just didn’t want to play that much in the second. In the third (period), we came out and we had that compete back in us. And, as soon as we took it to them, started taking the body…started playing the game like it’s supposed to be played…put pressure on their defence, they were giving turnovers the same way we were in our own end. But, we made good on the opportunities that we did have. Really, we eliminated a lot of their scoring chances. They didn’t have much in the third.”
Colby Sissons, Max Patterson and Beck Malenstyn replied for Swift Current as their five-game, home-ice winning streak came to an end. The Broncos record is 26-9-2 for 54 points…seven behind first place Moose Jaw in the East Division and three ahead of third place Brandon.
Saskatoon remains tied for fourth place in the East Division and seventh place in the Eastern Conference with the Regina Pats…but now six points clear of the Prince Albert Raiders for a playoff berth.
The Blades and Broncos meet again New Year’s Day at SaskTel Centre. Game time is 2:05 p.m. with the broadcast on 92-9, THE BULL at 1:30. Following is the official game summary from the WHL...
