All the taxi workers want is a level playing field and that's why they are rallying in front of City Hall this afternoon at 2, as the Transportation Committee meets to talk about ride sharing services.
Members of the United Steelworks Local 2014 and the Steelworkers Taxi Council are asking the City to consider the same regulations for ride share services like Uber and Lyft as taxi drivers and companies have in place. Local USW spokesperson Malik Draz explains that taxis pay commercial insurance and have annual inspections. They also have cameras for the safety for the public and for drivers and brokers need to submit data to the City. Draz adds that ride sharing apps offer no guarantees about accepting fares around the clock. He says they are open for changes with a modernized taxi industry, but with both taxis and ride sharing services under the same rules and regulations.
