If you are thinking about getting gift cards this holiday season, the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority has some advice.
First of all, read the fine print before buying, and understand what limits may exist on the card's use. Cards bought in Saskatchewan aren't allowed to have expiry dates, although there are a few exceptions. All fees must be paid up front and no additional monthly or usage fees are allowed after the card's purchase. Of course, if a company goes out of business, it may be hard to get a refund on any value on the card.
The authority says it typically sees a rise in calls and complaints about gift cards after the holidays. Consumers often raise concerns about usage limits and expiry dates.
