The Minister responsible for SGI introduced legislation today (Thurs) that would allow for ride sharing services like Uber to operate in Saskatchewan.
Minister Joe Hargrave says this gives people another option to get home safely rather than driving impaired. It doesn't mean anyone can hire themselves out. There is a framework for licensing and insurance and safeguards for the public. For instance, the ridesharing company must have a motor vehicle liability insurance policy with a minimum limit of $1-million. The company also has to insure every vehicle used to provide service. Municipalities will still be able to make their own bylaws on ridesharing companies and there will be mandatory criminal record checks for all drivers.
