The RCMP Academy says it will include a blanket exercise on Indigenous history.
Participants will take on the roles of Indigenous peoples in Canada. They will stand on blankets, representing their land, and physically walk through the pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization, and resistance historical periods. Starting tomorrow (tues), each cadet troop, training at the academy, will complete the blanket exercise as part of the module on missing persons. The instruction will be monitored by a knowledge keeper; an Elder from Saskatchewan. Today (mon), instructors will experience the exercise themselves and will be trained to reproduce the exercise for the cadets.
