A fire at a chemical plant early Monday morning was quickly dealt with by emergency crews.
The Saskatoon Fire Department was called just after 4 a.m. to Akzo Nobel Chemicals Ltd on Wanuskewin Road just north of Marquis Drive after a security guard noticed flames coming from a smokestack. When fire crews arrived, they found a tank about 40% full of fuel additives had ignited. Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Rodger says crews were prepared to deal with the chemicals in the plant through a pre-planning program, where firefighters familiarize themselves with processes and products so nothing comes as a complete surprise. The cause has yet to be determined. Damage is pegged at $20 thousand.. Wanuskewin Road was closed between 71st Street and Arthur Rose Road for much of Monday morning, but the road has since reopened.
