Saskatchewan's justice minister says he has a number of high priorities that must be addressed before marijuana is legalized.
The federal Liberal government is expected to introduce legislation today (Thurs) to start the process of legalizing marijuana.
Justice Minister Gord Wyant says he supports decriminalizing marijuana if they have a clear framework on a variety of issues, including where it can be distributed. Wyant says a number of professionals have found dispensing pot through a liquor board is not a good idea because it's not clear about the medical effects of combining alcohol and marijuana.
Another major issue is how police will enforce people high while behind the wheel. Wyant says there isn't a way to detect people on roads who are impaired on marijuana, so officers will need to be trained on signs of impairment and devices will need to be created. Wyant also says they need to address workplace safety is someone is impaired on marijuana and operating heavy machinery.
Wyant says he wants to work with his counterparts in Alberta and Manitoba to establish a constant legislation across the Prairie provinces for marihuana.
