The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce is making 2018 the year of creating closer ties with the Indigenous community.
CEO Steve McLellan says they have amended their bylaws to allow representatives from government-owned businesses to run for the board of directors. This recognizes the governance structure of First Nations businesses. He says the chamber recognizes the value of the governance structure within the First Nations community and the value that structure has shown in terms of business development. The chamber is also developing an Aboriginal business charter whereby non-Aboriginal businesses would sign an agreement making commitments in procurement, hiring and cultural practises to engage with the Indigenous business community . McLellan thinks this will be one of the biggest measures for success in the future.
