Since 1985, Habitat For Humanity Canada has brought communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.
Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon envisons a world where everyone has a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
How does it all work? Families interested in the Habitat Program apply to become homeowners. They’ll work 500 Volunteer Hours of work as their commitment to their home. Homeowners will take on an affordable mortgage that is indexed to their income – never exceeding more the 30% of their gross income. From there, they pay a monthly mortgage payment until they become the proud owner of their home. It’s an extremely rewarding process for everyone involved.
Affordable home ownership empowers families to improve their lives. Habitat homeowners have better health outcomes, their children achieve higher levels of educations and develop independence. When a family has a safe, stable and affordable place to call home they are able to create a better life for themselves and their children.
So now, where does the money go?
The mortgages that are being paid back by homeowners go right back to building more housing for Habitat for Humanity. Absolutely 100% goes to building houses – as all operational costs are funded through Habitats ReStore.
What is Habitats ReStore? First off – it’s one of Saskatoon’s LARGEST recyclers! Located on Avenue D Southm they sell new and used building materials donated by businesses and individuals. And since ReStore is open to the public – it makes it a great place for anyone to shop for deals on building and home supplies for their own projects! And the best part?? The ReStore funds Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon’s operational costs.
