If you’re a fan of 'The Simpsons,' you know Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the owner of the Kwik-E-Mart. Well now there’s a new documentary calling the character, and the show, racist!
It’s called 'The Problem With Apu,' and it alleges that an Indian character should not be voiced by a white actor, and only encourages harmful stereotypes.
Actor Hank Azaria, who voices Apu, has responded to the documentary. He says it makes some good points, and has given the people at 'The Simpsons' a lot to think about.
(I’m having a tough time with this one. On one hand, 'The Simpsons' exploits every stereotype. There’s Italian Mafioso Fat Tony and angry Scotsman Groundskeeper Willie. But on the other hand, I’m sure there was a generation of Indian Canadians who had to deal with people calling them "Apu" in school... which sucks!)
