Major news in the media industry: Disney has gotten even bigger by purchasing 21st Century Fox!
The deal reportedly cost $52-billion. Disney will now own Fox's movie and television studios, and regional sports network.
They will also own the rights to the original ‘Star Wars’ movies, Marvel’s ‘Avatar’ and ‘Deadpool,’ as well as TV shows such as ‘Modern Family’ and ‘The Simpsons.’ (They can also now put the ‘X-Men’ in the next ‘Avengers’ movie!)
What’s interesting is that Disney will also take on Fox’s debt of $14-billion, so really the deal is about $66-billion.
So what’s Fox going to keep? Basically, their news and (some) sports channels, and a 25% share of the new, enlarged Disney.
The question, also, is if government regulators will allow this deal. Remember they blocked AT&T when it tried to buy Time Warner for $85-billion, on the basis that it would raise prices for consumers and competitors. So, this isn’t exactly a done deal.
